The purpose of kyudo practice is to polish our hearts. We are not competing or merely trying to advance with a form. Our school of kyudo offers no rank and no reward for hitting the target. Sendai Sensei often emphasizes that everyone is at the same level. When we bring our high quality hearts together, no one is higher or lower than anyone else. In this same way, he simply calls instructors, "good help". Bearing this in mind, we can approach our practice and interactions with others with dignity, gentleness, and respect.

Shibata Kanjuro XX, Sendai explained these 3 Calligraphies

Rei - "The character on the left is the same as the word for 'kimono' and indicates bowing. The top right character means 'straight' or 'balance', in the sense that one is well-composed and also not tricky, not sideways, but direct. The lower right character means 'mame' or 'beans'. This refers to the fact that one's good manners should not only appear on occasion, just as one would not eat only one bean or a couple of beans. Rather, there should be countless expressions of good manners, all the time, continuously, from the beginning to the end of one's life."

Shin - "Shin gi means that we keep our commitments in our lives altogether. In this way, we should regard our fellow practitioners as our family. If someone is having particular difficulty (in or outside of the practice), students should extend to that person and be helpful. If there is illness or death in the family or other hardship, the kyudo community should offer steady, good help."

Chu - "Loyalty, in this sense, is not about fascism at all. We do not want to repeat the mistakes of history. The old historical pacts that led to war were not pacts of true

loyalty. Those were temporary agreements based on the ambition of ego. True loyalty is the antidote to fascism because it is loyalty to the good hearts we all share and to a greater vision for all of humanity."
